A Lūʻau with a Twist
A lūʻau is a must-do if you’re honeymooning in Waikiki. We’ve been on one on a previous trip that involved being shuttled from Waikiki to the west side of Oahu.
We didn’t realize there was one closer, literally steps away from the beachfront hotels that line Kalākaua Avenue.
Diamond Head Lūʻau was just a 17-minute walk from our hotel, the Hyatt Regency. Located at the Waikiki Aquarium, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset stroll by the strip on your way there.
The lūʻau starts at 5:30 PM beginning with a registration after which you’re welcomed with a beautiful fresh orchid lei (and a matching bracelet for the ladies) and your souvenir photo taken (purchase is optional).
Once inside, you’re greeted by the host and you may begin helping yourself with the delicious food offerings from 8 booths hosted by various local restaurants.
It’s not buffet-style but the servings and variety are more than enough to satiate any appetite.
They were all very tasty but my favorites were the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi-Mahi served with mango salsa on a bed of Manoa lettuce, the Poke Nachos, Coconut Crusted Shrimp and Coconut Lemon Herb Chicken with Lemongrass Coconut Rice.
Also, you’re offered a welcome mai tai plus 2 more drink tickets.
The cultural show was fun, entertaining and informative, featuring dances from different cultures and islands. Since this venue was smaller than the previous lūʻau we attended, there was a bigger opportunity for the performers to interact and engage with the audience.
Tip: We went on a Friday and at the end of the lūʻau, you get to watch the Hilton’s fireworks show from the other end of the strip. Despite the distance, it was still visible enough and amazing to watch.
We were stuffed when it was all over and were thankful for the walk back to our hotel to help burn it off. The evening stroll was as enjoyable as our walk going there.
Overall, it was an experience to remember and one that will complete any trip to Waikiki.
